[ox-en] 2nd algorithmic revolution (was: Re: [ox] [Fwd: verletzte bei heftiger Angriff auf Projektwerkstatt])

Hi all!

One note before: Please do *reply* to mail if and only if you really
want to reply. If you have a new subject simply write a new mail with
that subject. People browsing through the threaded archive will be
grateful.

Another note: Since this is in English anyway, I'll cross-post it to
the English list.

Ok. I'll link into that point.

over the last few weeks.

Good you brought this up. I already wondered whether to put this
thought here, but a mixture of overload and doubt prevented me from
that.

Actually I find it interesting, that patents are fought against on
this ground nowadays - and with success!

It is very hard for me to see any connection
between medicine and (time-based!) algorithms.

Well, I guess the connection to Free Software is more with the
scientific character of the development process. It is expensive (i.e.
needs lots of labor) to develop a new drug, but it's cheap to
reproduce it - as we can see in the case of the Indian drug producer.
It would be interesting to me to discuss, whether this is a general
trend which can be seen with more and more goods.

Yet the issues of why
something that can be reproduced nearly for free is not allowed to be
reproduced are the same as for software.

It's the same issue as with software: To make profits you need to have
scarcity. For a good which is not scarce but is available in abundance
it makes no sense to exchange it. Patents and other IPRs are ways to
accomplish scarcity.
