Re: [ox-en] interesting website

Franz,

I tell you what my main problem is.

First, no matter how rational an approach, we should have examples in the real world showing that it can become a realistic part of contemporary human desire, and I see no signs so far.

Second, capitalism means two things: 1) a dictatorship of capital as ownership; 2) a dictatorship of the market as allocation mechanism. All those who have been entrepreneurs, as I have, will conclude that 2 is just as difficult as one.

Now, through patrick says he is inspired by the GPL model, which puts 'users' in charge, I'm not sure that basic contention is correct. It is the producers, the programmers, who are in charge, even though they are <also> users, and users have an influence.

But what if users where in charge, would that not be much similar to the dictatorship of the market? I think we need mechanisms that can, ideally, integrate the interests of both worker-producers, and user-consumers, or more pragmatically, those two plus the owner-shareholder (if we want social changes to be non-coercive)

The core issue is that we need a differential treatment of immaterial production, where non-reciprocal peer production works just find; and material production, where the cost of the physical means of production precludes non-reciprocity. Therefore, there we still need either reciprocal schemes (gift economy) and forms of exchange (markets).

Michel

not so sure about the economic definitions (he even tops the
"transformation of GPL principles" that has been tried here), but there is
a lot of good will to get things going in the material world. Check it out
yourself and see if some debate can revitalize what seems to be dormant
here.
