Alles geht mal zu Ende, auch open theory! [english below]
Im nächsten Jahr 2010 feiert open theory sein zehnjähriges Bestehen. Das
ist ein gutes Datum, das Projekt zu beenden. -- Huch, warum das?
Im Jahr 2000 gab es noch nicht viele interaktive webbasierte Anwendungen
im Internet. Die Kommunikation lief vorwiegend in Newsgroups und
Mailinglisten. Es gab Foren hier und da, das Ur-Wiki war ein Geheimtipp,
Wikipedia gab es noch nicht und von Web 2.0 war noch nicht die Rede. Im
Jahr 2000 gab es Creative Commons nicht und die GNU Free Documentation
License war noch im Entwurfsstadium (sie wurde dann zur Lizenz bei open
theory).
In dieser Zeit war open theory ein Ansatz, die Mail-Kommunikation ins
Web zu tragen. Die schlichte Idee, Absätze an Absätze zu hängen so wie
man in E-Maildiskussionen einen Kommentar an einen Text hängt, war der
Kerngedanke von open theory. Alle Texte sollen offen und unter einer
freien Lizenz zugänglich sein. Der Modus der Freien Software sollte für
Theorie fruchtbar gemacht werden.
Mittlerweile haben ein paar Hunderttausend Menschen open theory besucht,
1363 Mitglieder haben sich eingetragen und 1074 Projekte sind
entstanden. Das ist ganz nett, aber wirklich groß geworden ist open
theory nicht. Eine exponentielle Wachstumsdynamik wie sonst oft bei
netzwerkorientierten Projekten kam nicht zustande. Sie war auch nicht
beabsichtigt, denn open theory zielte inhaltlich vor allem auf eine
Unterstützung der emanzipatorischen Debatte. Dazu kommt, dass sich
Theorie anders entwickelt als Freie Software und es dort ein so
schlichtes Kriterium wie »läuft oder läuft nicht« nicht gibt (was
eigentlich auch für Software gilt, aber das ist ein weites Feld).
Auch auf der Seite der Programmierung ist das Projekt im wesentlichen an
einer Person, sprich: an mir, hängengeblieben. Wichtige Unterstützung
gab es bei der Übersetzung der Website. Freie Software ist eben kein
Automatismus. Inzwischen ist die technische Grundlage veraltet. Ich
hatte noch einmal einen Renovierungsanlauf unternommen, aber mir fehlte
letztlich doch die Zeit und Energie, open theory nochmal komplett neu
zu entwickeln.
Es gibt, soweit ich weiss, kein vergleichbares System auf der Welt. Es
wird in dieser Form offensichtlich auch nicht unbedingt gebraucht. Es
gibt ja auch gute Alternativen: Wikis, Forensysteme, Blogs. Mir wird
etwas fehlen, aber ich werde open theory dennoch schrittweise
schließen.
Schluss in einem Jahr
Um nicht die vielen Autorinnen und Autoren vor den Kopf zu stoßen, werde
ich open theory schrittweise in einen Archivzustand überführen. So sieht
mein Plan aus:
- ab Anfang Mai 2009 können keine neuen Projekte mehr angelegt werden
- ab Anfang 2010 wird die Kommentarfunktion abgeschaltet
- zum Mai 2010 wird die Mailinglisten-Funktion beendet
- schließlich werden alle verbliebenen Seiten aktiver Projekte in
statische HTML-Seiten überführt und alle inaktiven Projekte gelöscht
Die Adressen (URLs) der auf diese Weise statisch archivierten Projekte
bleiben erhalten, Verlinkungen werden also weiter funktionieren.
In der Zeit bis zur Archivierung im Mai 2010 können alle Projekte, die
das wünschen, auf andere Plattformen umziehen. Es ist nicht schwer,
sich (kostenlos) ein Blog zu besorgen oder eine Website einzurichten.
Ich selbst werde vermutlich zwei oder drei Folgeprojekte zu meinen
Themen »Kritische Informatik«, »Kritische Psychologie« und
allgemein »offene Theorie« als Blogs weiterbetreiben.
Diese drei möglichen neuen Blogs können auch neue Heimat für bisherige
open theory Projekte werden, die nicht von mir sind. Wer also keine
gute Umzugsmöglichkeit für sich sieht und seine Texte aber gerne
weiterhin öffentlich zugänglich und kommentierbar halten will, kann
mich in den nächsten 12 Monaten ansprechen. Allerdings wird der
Charakter ein anderer als bisher sein, denn auf den neuen Blogs
entscheide ich selbst, was dort veröffentlicht wird.
Ich danke allen Nutzerinnen und Nutzern von open theory für die
vielfältige Unterstützung, die es über die Jahre hinweg gegeben hat,
insbesondere für viele interessante Texte und Debatten.

Everything has an end, also open theory! [deutsch oben]
in 2010, next year, open theory is celebrating its ten year existence.
This is a good date to end the project. -- Oops, why that?
In 2000 there were not many interactive webbased applications in the
internet. The communication predominantly took place in newsgroups and
mailing lists. There were bulletin board somewhere, the Ur-Wiki was an
insider tip, Wikipedia does yet not exist, and Web 2.0 wasn't talked
about. In 2000 Creative Commons does not exist and the GNU Free
Documentation License was only in draft stage (it then became the open
theory license).
During this time open theory was an approach to carry the mail
communication into the web. The simple idea to put paragraphs below
paragraphs as you put comments below a text part in email debates was
the core thought of open theory. All texts should be openly available
under a free license. The free software mode should be made fruitful
for theory.
Meanwhile some hundred thousend people visited open theory, 1363 members
registered, and 1074 projects were born. This is nice, but open theory
hasn't grown really big. An exponential expansion dynamic did not occur
like with other network based projects. It wasn't even intended, because
open theory aimed for supporting of emancipatory debates. Additionally,
theory develops differently compared to free software and there is no
simple criterion like »runs or does not run« (which even holds true for
software, but this a broad field).
Also on the side of programming the project essentially rested upon a
single person, namly: me. There were important support translating
the website. Free software isn't a kind of automatism. Meanwhile the
technical platform is out-dated. Once I took an attempt to renovate the
technical base, but finally enough time and energy to re-develop open
theory entirely new was missing.
As far as I know there is no comparable system in the world. Obviously
this type of application is not necessarily needed. And there are good
alternatives: Wikis, Bulletin Boards, Blogs. I will miss something,
however, I will close open theory step by step.
The end in one year
In order to not affront the many authors I will successive transfer open
theory into an archive status. This is my plan:
- beginning with may 2009 new pojects can not be created any longer
- at the beginning of 2010 the commenting function will be switched off
- around may 2010 the mailinglist function will be stopped
- finally all remaining pages of active projects will be transfered into
static HTML pages and all inactive projects will be deleted
The addresses (URLs) of the archived static projects will be preserved,
so that links will further work.
During the period until archiving in may 2010 all project who wish can
move to other platforms. It is not difficult to organize a (cost free)
blog or to set up a website. I for myself will presumably pursue two or
three following projects as blogs for my topics of »critical computer
science«, »critical psychology«, and generally »open theory«.
These three possible new blogs may be a new home for previous open
theory projects which are not from me. Anybody who does not find a good
option for a move can contact me in the next 12 months. However, the
character of these projects will be different than now, because on the
new blogs I decide for myself which texts to publish.

which was given over the years, particulary for lots of interesting
texts and debates.
