Gang,
StefanMz has recently posted some interesting thoughts about
selbstentfaltung on the German list (StefanMn's comment: "a true
highlight"), which I think are relevant in the context of the
self-unfolding of the individual being a necessary precondition for the
self-unfolding of all. So, here's my unapproved translation. :-)
The thread this is from compares public to partial interests (partial
interests being, if I understand correctly, interests of individuals or
sub-groups put forward in a way that is harmful to others in the group
as a whole, i.e. interests which are realized on the expense of others).
At this point in the thread, discussion is about how selbstentfaltung
can be in the public (or "overall") interest even if the person
self-unfolding is only doing something little for themself, e.g. writing
a small shell script as the canonical example goes. Now for my
translation (which is sometimes a bit loose-- it's a quick one) of
Stefan's text.
Es gibt zwei Arten oder Seiten von "im allgemeinen Interesse": Das
Produkt, das Resultat, die Wirkung, die Andere erfahren, und die Person,
die sich durch die Entfaltung verändert hat - was auch Andere erfahren.
Beides ist wichtig!
There are two kinds of or sides to "in the public interest:" The
product, the result, the impact others experience, and the person who
has changed by unfolding themselves - something that has an impact on
others, too. Both are important!
Selbstentfaltung (im allgemeinen Interesse) zeitigt zwei Resultate: ich
schaffe was allgemein Nützliches und ich erschaffe mich als jemand, der
sich selbstentfaltet. Beides ist im Interesse aller. Dabei kann die
Bedeutung des Ersten verschieden sein: Der Allgemeinheitsgrad des
Nützlichen kann gegen Null gehen. Das Zweite ist aber immer präsent -
weswegen es btw. total daneben ist vom Altruismus zu sprechen, was
unterstellt, das Zweite sei abwesend.
Selbstentfaltung (in the public interest) has two results: I create
something that is useful to many and I form myself as somebody who is
unfolding themselves. Both is in the interest of all. The importance of
the first can differ: the degree of usefulness to others can approach
zero. But the second is always present - because of which it is BTW
totally off track to speak of altruism, which wrongly presupposes the
second not to be there.
Der Monaden-Bürger kann sich hingegen nur vorstellen, am Produkt des
anderen interessiert zu sein, während das Interesse an der Person nur
instrumentellen Charakter hat. Der Grund ist der äußere Selbstzweck der
Wertverwertung, der sich interaktiv durchsetzt. Bei der Selbstentfaltung
hingegen habe ich hingegen ein Interesse an der Selbstentfaltung des
Anderen. Dies aber nicht im instrumentellen Sinne, damit ein gutes
Produkt rauskommt, sondern ich habe ein Interesse an der Entfaltung als
_Selbstzweck_. Denn nur die Selbstentfaltung als Selbstzweck ist der
freie Entfaltungsmodus. Es geht also darum, nicht kurzfristig gute
Produkte zu bekommen, sondern langfristig Menschen, die im eigenen
Interesse für ein gutes Leben für alle sorgen.
The [average person today*], on the other hand, can only conceive having
an interest in the other's product, while the interest in the other
person is of instrumental nature only. [...*] When self-unfolding, on
the other hand, I want the selbstentfaltung of the other person to
happen, not in an instrumental sense in order to get a good product, but
rather my interest is in the unfolding as _an end in itself_. That's
because only the selbstentfaltung as an end in itself is the free mode
of unfolding. So the point is not to get good products in the short
term, but to get people in the loong term who, in their own interest,
take care of a good life for everybody.
* What exactly is a Monaden-Bürger? And what the hell is Wertverwertung
(literally: "value valueization")? Stefan, maybe you can translate these
passages, or somebody else can. Maybe then I get a chance to understand
them, too... ;-)
