Hi Gregers,

Great to hear from you

And would you have any sympathy for the choice of Johan?

I have full sympathy for the choice of Johan (and we all have to wait for the paperback issue of the book).

What is a lesser known and not yet so upcoming young academic to do?

Depends - if a young academic wants to have a job, they probably have to play by the rules. But, there are also more open ways to go about it - several of the bigger academic associations are beginning to work on 'public' website based journals (also peer-reviewed) such as: http://www.theasa.org/publications/asaonline.htm

You can also say: Fuck it, I'll just publish my book as 'print-on-demand' (including an ISBN number) and see if anybody will buy it (then it could be ordered through all the big internet-bookshops). Or publish your articles in journals who have a more open-access approach, or are independent?

So what I mean is the problem is structural, and your problem with
Danah should not distract from that issue.

I think we all agree that the problem is structural - that Danah plays a dumb game about 'that she doesn't know this' is what I object against.

The only way to work against this structural rigidity is to think about your choices, and stand by what you did/do (and Danah could just have posted her paper on her blog, then people would be able to read it).

I've personally (in this phase of my life) decided to license my work under GNU GPL 2.0 - things I've written in the past have been under "normal" copyright (but I don't ask anybody to feel sorry for me).
