Another possibility could be just to tke the german word
"Selbstentfaltung" for english texts, too.

The problem I would have with this is that, to a new person with no German 
speaking ability, "Selbstentfaltung" means even less than "self-unfolding".  
I would prefer to come up with a word that a new person can look at and get a 
clear idea of what is ment from what s/he already knows.
